Danzatrice d'alto livello, gira il suo primo cortometraggio sul tema del balletto, Dance in the Sun (1953). Nel 1960 firma il manifesto del New American Cinema e dirige il suo primo lungometraggio, The Connection. Di notevole densità e realismo critico è il successivo The Cool World (1963), un'incursione in profondità nel ghetto nero di Harlem, con uno stile che fonde in perfetto equilibrio i modi del cinéma-vérité e quelli dell'underground. Anche Portrait of Jason (1967) è un film-documento sulla difficile quotidianità di un omosessuale, che conferma la sua tenace avversione per ogni forma di emarginazione. Le sue ultime opere, A Jazz Video Game (1984) e Made in America (1985), sono dedicate al jazzista O. Coleman.

Avant garde dancer who shot her first short film about ballet Dance in the Sun in 1953. In 1960 she signs thel New American Cinema Manifesto and realises her first feature film, The Connection. The Cool World (1963) is the first movie to dramatize a story on black street gangs without relying upon Hollywood-style moralizing. Shot on location in Harlem, it was based on a novel by Warren Miller. This was the first film to be produced by Frederick Wiseman. Portrait of Jason (1967) is a film-document about the life of a homosexual man. Her last works, A Jazz Video Game (1984) and Made in America (1985), are dedicated to the jazzman  O. Coleman.
