Righelli Gennaro
Born in Salerno, in 1886, Gennaro Righelli was a prolific director and screenwriter. Making his debut at Cines (1911), then passing through Vesuvio Film and Tiber (1916), he was a productive filmmaker drawing inspiration from literature (Il viaggio, 1921) and melodrama with impressive sceneries (Cainà - La figlia dell’isola, 1922, recently restored). During the crisis in Italian cinema, he was active in Germany (1923-1929), where together with his wife and diva Maria Jacobini, he directed Der geheime Kurier (1927), adapted from Stendhal’s Le Rouge et le Noir; he returned to Italy to direct the first Italian sound film (La canzone dell’amore, 1930) at Stefano Pittaluga’s new Cines. A filmmaker of tremendous ability (La scala, 1931), he was original (Pensaci, Giacomino!, 1936 based on Pirandello) and well-mannered (La voce senza volto, 1939) in comedy, both Neapolitan (Quei due, 1935) and Genoese (Colpi di timone, 1942). After the war he was largely successful with his amusing popular comedy (Abbasso la miseria, 1945), followed by the merry sequel (Abbasso la ricchezza, 1946) with the irresistible Anna Magnani. In 1947 he directed Il Corriere del Re.
