Papatakis Nico

Regista francese di origine greca (Addis Abeba, Etiopia, 1918). Nato da padre greco e da madre etiope, cresciuto a Beyrouth, poi esiliatosi in Francia, Nico Papatakis è una delle figure più spettacolari del Saint-Germain-des-Prés del dopoguerra. Dal 1946 al 1954 dirige il cabaret “La Rose rouge” che lancia, tra gli altri, Juliette Gréco, Mouloudji, Michel Piccoli. Nel 1950 produce l’unico film di Jean Genet, Un Chant d’amour, la cui tematica omosessuale scandalizza. In seguito, esercita diversi mestieri. Nel 1957 abbandona la Francia per gli Stati Uniti dove incontra Cassavetes, con cui coproduce il suo primo film Shadows. Poco tempo dopo tenta di fare adattare e girare La Question, tratto dal libro di Henri Alleg, ma il progetto non sarà mai realizzato. S’interessa, quindi, al fatto di cronaca legato alle sorelle Papin che realizza nel 1963 con Les Abysses. Il film, sostenuto da Sartre, Breton, Beauvoir, Malraux, è selezionato al festival di Cannes. Il suo secondo lungometraggio, Les Pâtres du désordre, la cui azione si svolge in Grecia all’epoca dei colonnelli, è realizzato nella clandestinità. Nel 1968 gira I Fotografia, un film austero e duro sull’esilio. Il suo ultimo film, Les Équilibristes (1991), è una specie di canto funebre alla memoria di Abdallah, un giovane circense a Parigi all’inizio degli anni ’60.

Born to a Greek father and Ethiopian mother, raised in Beyrouth, then exiled in France, Nico Papatakis is one of the most spectacular figures of the post-war Saint-Germain-des-Prés. From 1946 to 1954 he managed the “La Rose Rouge” cabaret that made Juliette Gréco, Mouloudji and Michel Piccoli famous. In 1950 e produced the Jean Genet’s only film, Un Chant d’amour, whose homosexual theme made a huge scandal. Following that, he did various activities. In 1957 he left France for the U.S. where he met Cassavetes with whom he coproduced his first film Shadows. Soon afterwards, he tried to adapt and film La Question, based on Henri Alleg’s book, but the project was never completed. He then began to interest himself in the events surrounding the Papin sisters which he then made into Les Abysses in 1963. The film, supported by Sartre, Breton, Beauvoir, Malraux was selected for the Cannes festival. His second full-length feature, Les Pâtres du désordre, which is set in Greece during the reign of the Colonels, was filmed illegally. In 1968, he shot I Fotografia, an austere and hard film about exile. His last film, Les Équilibristes (1991), is a kind of funeral eulogy in the memory of Abdallah, a young circensian in Paris at the beginning of the ‘60s.
