Vent'anni dopo la prima guerra mondiale, nel 1937, il soldato Stanlio, fedele alla consegna, fa ancora la guardia alla trincea, dove é stato messo nel 1917, e continua a tirare con la sua mitragliatrice contro gli aeroplani di passaggio; finché un bel giorno un pilota, seccato, atterra li' vicino e gli fa notare che la guerra é finita da parecchi anni. Il suo inseparabile compagno Ollio é tornato a casa da un pezzo, e s'é sposato. Il giorno in cui festeggia l'anniversario del suo matrimonio, apprende che l'eroico Stanlio é tornato dopo venti anni. Immediatamente ne va alla ricerca e lo invita a casa sua; ma é una pessima idea, perché Stanlio é piu' trasognato che mai e ne combina di ogni specie.
