Un classico della letteratura francese adattato da un italiano per una produzione tedesca con un Julien Sorel rus­so... «Il titolo... il nome di Mosjoukine... la sua recitazione... la bellezza delle due donne... l'esattezza della ricostruzione storica. La realizzazione è lussuosa, senza pesantezza, e la fotografia è spesso bellissima, con luci sapienti», questi gli elementi positivi elencati da Lucie Derain nel suo articolo per «La Cinématographie française» (1928). Non tratto da Stendhal, ma ispirato a Stendhal, teneva a precisare la giornalista; non ci si stupirà di scoprire dai primi metri del film una Mme de Rênal «ubriaca d'amore, mentre nel libro è una donna pia che ama i suoi figli (totalmente rimossi dal film)».

A classic of French literature adapted by an Italian production with the Russian Julien Sorel... "The title... the name of Mosjoukine... his acting... the beauty of the two women... the accuracy of the historical reconstruction. The direction is sumptuous, without heaviness, and the cinematography is often beautiful, with masterly light," these were the film's positive qualities listed by Lucie Derain in his article for "La Cinématographie française" (1928). Not about Stendhal, but inspired by Stendhal, the journalist had to specify; we are not surprised to discover from the very start of the film a Mme de Rênal "intoxicated with love, while in the book she is a pious woman who loves her children (completely cut from the film)."
