Il celebre romanzo di Stendhal, Il rosso e il nero, adattato e realizzato da Pierre Cardinal, fu la prima opera della serie televisiva "L'esprit et la lettre" [Lo spirito e la lettera]. Per rivelare lo spirito di quest'opera e l'anima dei suoi protagonisti, Pierre Cardinal li filma da soli e di fronte. Tutti gli attori parlano e si rispondono di fronte alla cinepresa, quindi al telespettatore che penetra l'intimità dei personaggi. I dialoghi sono stati ripresi scrupolosamente dal romanzo per illustrare i grandi momenti psicologici vissuti dagli attori per incarnare i personaggi.

Stendhal's celebrated novel, The Red and the Black, adapted and directed by Pierre Cardinal, was the first work in the television series "L'esprit et la lettre" (The Spirit and the Letter). To reveal the spirit of this work and the souls of its protagonists, Pierre Cardinal only filmed them alone and from the front. The actors speak and respond to the camera, and thus to the viewer, who is able to penetrate the intimacy of the characters. The dialogue was carefully adapted from the novel to illustrate the great psychological moments experienced by the actors as they play their roles.
